Jeon Hae-cheol: "No Chance for Han Dong-hoon Emergency Committee's Success... Are They Creating a 'Prosecutor's Parliament'?"

"Han Dong-hoon, Cheers Only from Supporters... Majority of the Public Frowns"

Regarding Han Dong-hoon, Minister of Justice, resigning from his ministerial position and accepting the role of Emergency Response Committee Chairperson of the People Power Party, Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed a pessimistic view, saying "there is little chance of success."

On the 22nd, on SBS's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show,' Rep. Jeon said, "The biggest problem in the ruling party is that President Yoon Seok-yeol is excessively involved in party management and controls it. If that concern and worry cannot be resolved, there is little chance of success."

He also gave a harsh evaluation of former Minister Han as a cabinet member. Rep. Jeon said, "Cabinet members are supposed to properly fulfill their roles in the cabinet and serve the people. Above all, they need to work well with the National Assembly, but in the case of former Minister Han, he often provoked political strife without reason," adding, "While that may have been cheered by some supporters, the majority of the public frowned upon it and it did not align with common sense. In that regard, I do not believe former Minister Han will be very successful."

He also said that the 'Han Dong-hoon Emergency Committee' would turn the National Assembly into a 'Prosecutors' National Assembly.' He stated, "A bigger problem with former Minister Han is that all appointments, recommendations, and verifications in the Yoon Seok-yeol government so far have been made by prosecutors or former prosecutors, and those issues have continued to be shown. Now, there is concern that even the National Assembly will be turned into a prosecutors' National Assembly."

This is the so-called 'Prosecutors' Republic' frame. However, within the party, there are also concerns that the People Power Party might frame the situation as 'Prosecutors versus Defendants.' Regarding this, Rep. Jeon said, "It is true that there have been excessive investigations by the prosecution. The public largely acknowledges those excessive investigations. In that sense, rather than adopting that frame, we should point out each excessive investigation by the prosecution and demonstrate the legitimacy of our stance first," adding, "After that, the party must perform its role well in the upcoming general election to avoid being caught up in such a frame."

Rep. Jeon emphasized that, in this context, 'electoral reform' is essential. He said, "We must make clear promises to the public and show the party's reformist image to prepare for the general election. We need to provide a definite answer on electoral reform and show a resolute stance," adding, "Failing to do so, and not taking necessary measures for party unity and integration, is what worries me. It is not appropriate for the party to be swept up in the prosecution frame or to focus too much on it right now."
