Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 22nd that it signed a business agreement with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) on the 19th to establish an 'AI·DATA Industry Education and Research Innovation Cluster' (AI Innovation Cluster) within the Hanam Gyosan Public Housing District.
The AI Innovation Cluster will be located on approximately 30,000㎡ within the Hanam Gyosan New Town and will include ▲Global Multi-Campus ▲Global R&D Center ▲Supercomputing Center ▲AI+X (Artificial Intelligence Convergence) Training Center, among others.
To create a large-scale AI complex, prestigious overseas universities such as Carnegie Mellon University and the National University of Singapore, along with POSTECH (AI Research Institute) and numerous domestic universities and companies, are expected to jointly participate.
About 3,000 AI experts with master's and doctoral degrees will reside in the AI Innovation Cluster, strengthening the self-sufficiency functions of the new town by creating high-quality jobs for future industries.
In particular, a dual master's and doctoral degree program will be operated in connection with Carnegie Mellon University and the National University of Singapore.
LH expects to make significant contributions to nurturing AI professionals and to the expansion of the higher education system that Hanam City is promoting.
Furthermore, by introducing the National University of Singapore’s Net-Zero building technology based on AI technology into the AI Innovation Cluster, Hanam Gyosan New Town is expected to advance as an energy-specialized city.
Since May, LH has been continuously consulting with related organizations such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Gyeonggi Province, and Hanam City to establish the AI Innovation Cluster.
Under this agreement, LH will support district plan changes, approvals, and related administrative tasks, while POSTECH will form a consortium with Carnegie Mellon University, the National University of Singapore, POSCO DX, and others.
Additionally, in the first half of next year, a working-level consultative body will be formed with the participation of Gyeonggi Province, Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH), and Hanam Urban Corporation (HUIC), the joint project implementers of Hanam Gyosan New Town, to establish a business plan. In the second half of next year, the goal is to sign a residency agreement.
LH evaluates this agreement as the first step for the 3rd phase new town to leap forward as a self-sufficient city centered on education and research.
Hanam Gyosan New Town was designated as a public housing district in October 2019, completed land compensation this year, and began construction in September along with the second round of pre-subscription.
LH President Lee Han-jun said, “Through the establishment of the AI Innovation Cluster with POSTECH, we expect Hanam Gyosan New Town to develop into a key city in the southeastern region by securing and nurturing future global core talents and creating specialized jobs through the continuous influx of related companies and personnel.”
