Seoul City announced on the 21st that it has pilot-installed 'red remaining time display traffic lights' at five locations, including around City Hall and in front of Gwanghwamun Woldae, to create a safe traffic environment and improve pedestrian convenience.
The red remaining time display traffic lights not only show the remaining time for crossing during the green signal as before but also indicate the remaining waiting time during the red signal. However, to prevent pedestrians from starting to cross before the signal changes, the remaining time is not displayed when there are 6 seconds or less left on the red signal.
Seoul City explained that to introduce the red remaining time display traffic lights, it upgraded the traffic signal control system in the second half of this year to ensure the red remaining time is displayed despite various signal cycles and changes in the traffic environment. The city plans to survey citizen satisfaction with the red remaining time display traffic lights and expand their installation throughout Seoul starting next year.
Yoon Jong-jang, Director of the Urban Transportation Office of Seoul City, said, "We will continue to do our best to promote various policies to create a safe and convenient pedestrian environment for citizens."
