'Seonwon Guhara Act' Passed in Plenary Session... Compensation Limits for Parents Who Do Not Fulfill Childcare Obligations

On the 20th, the Amendment to the Seafarers Act Passed in the Plenary Session

If a parent fails to fulfill their child-rearing obligations, a bill limiting the full or partial payment of survivor compensation or missing person compensation for the children of seafarers passed the National Assembly plenary session on the 20th.

On the afternoon of the same day, the ruling and opposition parties approved the "Seafarers Act Amendment" at the National Assembly plenary session with 190 votes in favor and 2 abstentions out of 192 members present.

The amendment was prepared to prevent situations where a parent who did not fulfill their child-rearing obligations for a seafarer claims the right to receive survivor compensation or missing person compensation, thereby restricting the compensation payment to the survivor who fulfilled the obligation on their behalf.

In cases where a person responsible for raising the seafarer's child did not fulfill this duty, the maritime port authority will review the case and, considering the period and extent of non-fulfillment, may withhold full or partial payment of the relevant compensation.
