Korea-Japan Financial Authorities Hold Regular Meeting After 7 Years... Agree to Cooperate on Financial Innovation

The regular meeting (shuttle meeting) between Korean and Japanese financial supervisory authorities was held in Seoul for the first time in seven years. On the 20th, the Financial Services Commission announced that on the 19th, Chairman Kim Ju-hyun and Teruhisa Kurita, Commissioner of the Japan Financial Services Agency, held a high-level meeting at the government office in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

Chairman Kim and Commissioner Kurita met in Tokyo, Japan, last October for a discussion and decided to hold regular meetings. At this meeting, the Korean and Japanese authorities revised the Memorandum of Understanding on Financial Supervisory Cooperation signed in November 2014.

The scope of supervisory cooperation between the authorities was expanded to include financial innovation and sustainable finance.

Chairman Kim said at the talks, "As the Japanese government is actively promoting policies for digital transformation and startup fostering, Korean startups and fintech companies are very interested in entering the Japanese market," adding "the Financial Services Commission and related institutions plan to hold investor relations (IR) events, including the 'Next Round' hosted by the Korea Development Bank, in Japan next year."

On the same day, Lee Bok-hyun, Governor of the Financial Supervisory Service, also held talks with Commissioner Kurita at the Financial Supervisory Service in Yeouido, Seoul. Governor Lee said, "I consider it very meaningful that the cooperation system between the two countries on global supervisory issues has become stronger," and added, "I expect cooperation and coordination between the authorities of the two countries to become more active, especially regarding digital transformation of the financial industry and sustainable finance."

Commissioner Kurita responded, saying, "The Korea-Japan financial supervisory regular meeting will be an important foundation to further enhance cooperation between the authorities of the two countries," and "I hope that dialogue and information sharing between the authorities of the two countries will be further promoted in the fields of sustainable finance and financial innovation."
