Efforts to Secure International Competitiveness of Korea's Fisheries Industry
Professor Im Hangyu of the Department of Marine and Fisheries Resources at National Mokpo University (President Song Hacheol) announced on the 20th that he received the Grand Prize in the Industrial Promotion category at the ‘2023 Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and organized by the Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology Promotion Institute on the 19th.
The Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology Awards recognize researchers and institutions that have achieved outstanding results through research and development in the marine and fisheries sector and contributed to the development of the marine and fisheries industry by disseminating and expanding these achievements. Winners are selected based on performance in two categories: ‘Academic Research’ and ‘Industrial Promotion.’

This year, in the Industrial Promotion category, Professor Im Hangyu of National Mokpo University was honored with the Grand Prize for his contributions to the development, dissemination, and expansion of the technology for ‘Establishing a Year-Round Production Base and Improving Productivity of High-Value Flatfish Eggs.’
Professor Im has published a total of 10 papers in prestigious domestic and international journals, including 8 SCI-level papers related to this research, and has completed 9 patent applications/registrations and 6 technology transfers.
He is also the principal investigator of Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries R&D projects such as the Big Data-Based Technology Development for Improving Aquaculture Productivity (5 years, 17.5 billion KRW) and the Development of Certification Technology for Fishery Seeds (7 years, 9.3 billion KRW), striving to develop aquaculture technology as a future food industry and to secure the international competitiveness of Korea’s fisheries industry.
Professor Im stated, “I am deeply grateful for the recognition of my efforts and achievements so far, and I will continue to work harder to utilize scientific aquaculture industry development strategies and increase the profits of aquaculture farms through ongoing research and development.”
Meanwhile, from the 2024 academic year, the Department of Marine and Fisheries Resources at National Mokpo University will be reorganized and operated as the Department of Fisheries Biomedical Sciences to further focus on cultivating specialized human resources tailored to regional demand.
