US Electric Vehicle Charging Standardized to 'Tesla Specification'... Hyundai Motor to Adopt from Next Year

The Society of Automotive Engineers Korea Announces 'NACS Connector Standard Technology Report'

The leading organization of automotive technology researchers in the United States has laid the foundation to standardize Tesla's electric vehicle charging connector across the country.

On the 19th (local time), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) announced the release of a Technical Information Report (TIR) on the NACS standard (SAE J3400TM), which can dramatically improve charging accessibility for electric vehicle drivers throughout North America. NACS is a charging connector developed by the U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

Since Ford announced in May that it would adopt Tesla's NACS system, many other automakers have joined, sparking a movement to standardize NACS instead of the existing CCS standard.

The SAE revealed plans in June to establish a technical standard for NACS and completed the Technical Information Report within six months. The organization explained that this report will help ensure that electric vehicle and charging station manufacturers and suppliers across North America can produce and distribute NACS standard connectors.

Within the automotive industry, it is expected that the SAE's NACS technical standardization will reduce dependence on Tesla in the manufacturing and distribution process of this charging connector, as it will become easier for all automakers and charger manufacturers to apply NACS connectors and ports.

Accordingly, more automakers are expected to adopt NACS charging ports for their electric vehicles. The Associated Press (AP) commented, "Tesla's charging standard has long conflicted with the CCS connector used by other automakers for electric vehicles, but this announcement by SAE formalizes what has been happening across the industry this year."

The outlet also reported that the White House supports this trend. According to AP, senior officials in the Biden administration stated, "For the time being, many vehicles on the road (charging stations) are expected to use both charging methods."

Previously, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHA) established federal subsidy requirements for charging stations mandating CCS connectors but allowed the additional installation of NACS connectors.

Earlier, Hyundai Motor Group announced in October that starting from the fourth quarter of next year, all electric vehicles sold in the U.S. will be equipped with NACS charging ports. As a result, Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicles will be able to use Tesla charging stations?12,000 units across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico?as well as all other charging stations using NACS connectors.
