GH Challenges 25-Story Modular Housing... MOU with Hyundai Engineering and GS Construction

GH Challenges 25-Story Modular Housing... MOU with Hyundai Engineering and GS Construction Kim Se-yong, President of Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) (center), is taking a commemorative photo on the 18th after signing a mutual business agreement for cooperation on high-rise modular housing with Hyundai Engineering and GS Construction.

Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) has joined hands with Hyundai Engineering and GS Construction to realize high-rise modular technology.

On the 18th, GH announced that it signed a high-rise modular mutual cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Engineering and GS Construction at the Suwon Convention Center to share technology and collaborate on the pioneering execution of high-rise modular housing.

Modular housing is a type of housing constructed by manufacturing major structural components in a factory and then assembling them on-site. It has the advantage of generating less noise, dust, and waste. Although it is an eco-friendly process, building high-rise structures of 13 floors or more faces legal regulations such as fire resistance standards, and construction costs are relatively higher compared to steel-reinforced concrete.

GH applied the modular method to complete the 14-unit Gyeonggi Happy Housing in Hadaewon, Seongnam, Gyeonggi in 2019, and the 106-unit Gyeonggi Happy Housing in Yongin Yeongdeok in 2023.

In particular, the 13-story Gyeonggi Happy Housing in Yongin Yeongdeok, which applied 33 major proprietary modular technologies, is the tallest modular housing in Korea and received the Presidential Award at the 2023 Korea Land Awards.

Hyundai Engineering is preparing for construction in the first half of 2024 for the 180-unit Gari-bong Happy Housing in Guro-gu, Seoul, where modular construction methods have been introduced. GS Construction also secured the contract for the 130-unit public rental housing at Sinmun Apartment in Incheon, scheduled for completion in 2024.

According to the agreement, the three organizations plan to continuously build a cooperative relationship to strengthen competitiveness in high-rise modular construction by collaborating on ▲ OSC (Off-Site Construction, a method where modular construction components are manufactured off-site and assembled on-site) ▲ high-rise modular technology ▲ securing carbon neutrality and eco-friendly construction technologies.

Kim Se-yong, CEO of GH, emphasized, "Through the MOU with domestic and international companies possessing high-rise modular technology, we will actively promote 25-story modular housing in Gyeonggi Province and become the leading public corporation driving the revitalization of modular housing in Korea."

Previously, on the 12th and 13th (local time), GH signed an MOU in London, UK, with Elements Europe, a local steel modular specialist company, and HTA Design LLP, an architectural design firm, for the exchange of high-rise modular housing technology.
