OpenAI Announces AI Research Improving AI Training and Enhancement
$10 Million Funding for AI Control Research

Editor's NoteSince the emergence of ChatGPT, the world has been buzzing with artificial intelligence (AI). Technology is changing rapidly, and news is pouring in every day. Even top industry experts are struggling to keep up. It's overwhelming to consume it all, but you can't afford to miss out either. We bring you the key points from the weekly AI issues, carefully selected and easy to digest.
AI Teaching AI
[AI One-Bite News] Is Self-Evolving AI Coming... AGI Era Approaching

OpenAI used the AI model GPT-2, developed in 2019, to train GPT-4, which was released earlier this year, achieving performance at the level of GPT-3.5. Although it does not match the human-optimized GPT-4 capabilities, this shows that AI can train and improve other AI. Furthermore, it implies that AI can evolve itself. The research was conducted by the 'Super-Alignment' team, which is searching for technologies to control AI. This team is led by Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's Chief Scientist, who played a key role in the removal of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last month. They aimed to test whether AI can supervise AI, and ended up creating a student better than the teacher. An OpenAI researcher commented that "Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is approaching very quickly." AGI refers to AI with intelligence comparable to or on par with humans. In preparation for the emergence of superhuman AI, OpenAI has launched a recruitment drive for researchers. Along with the Super-Alignment team, they have offered a total of $10 million (approximately 1.3 billion KRW) in funding to develop safe AI. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is also said to be participating in this program.

AI Assistant Comes Inside Glasses

Meta is embedding an AI assistant into its smart glasses, 'Ray-Ban.' The assistant answers users' questions based on what the glasses see and hear. It also features information search capabilities using Microsoft (MS) 'Bing.' In a demonstration video by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, when he asked, "Recommend pants that go well with the shirt I'm wearing," the assistant suggested several options. Although the information search does not yet reflect real-time data, it is expected to be a useful feature. Users can get helpful answers on the go, such as questions about nearby traffic conditions or events visible on the street. Currently, testing is underway with some users in the U.S., and the official release is planned for next year.

Google Gemini Integrated into Enterprise Services

Google is targeting enterprise customers by integrating its generative AI 'Gemini' into its cloud services. Less than a week after unveiling Gemini on the 7th, Google incorporated it into 'Vertex AI,' Google Cloud's enterprise AI platform. Google shared an example of a real estate rental company using Vertex AI: uploading videos of properties taken with a smartphone camera and requesting the creation of three photos, descriptions, and promotional texts, which the AI then produces.

[AI One-Bite News] Is Self-Evolving AI Coming... AGI Era Approaching

Microsoft (MS) has partnered with the largest U.S. labor union, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). This is the first official agreement between big tech and labor groups to discuss AI. As concerns grow that AI might take away jobs, they are coming together to alleviate these worries and find ways to respond. MS has committed to helping workers improve their understanding of AI technologies and find new opportunities in the AI field.

Intel Challenges Nvidia with AI Chip
[AI One-Bite News] Is Self-Evolving AI Coming... AGI Era Approaching

U.S. semiconductor company Intel has unveiled its next-generation AI chip targeting Nvidia. The new product is named 'Gaudi3.' Scheduled for release next year, Gaudi3 offers up to four times faster processing speed compared to its predecessor and 1.5 times increased capacity of high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Intel claims its performance surpasses Nvidia's hit product, the 'H100.' Gaudi3 is expected to be integrated into products from Dell, MS, and Lenovo. AMD recently launched its AI chip MI 300X, also emphasizing superiority over the H100. The AI semiconductor market landscape is attracting attention as it evolves.
