Over 30 Minhwa Paintings, Art Imbibed at the Tip of Hanol's Brush
At Dalbit Gallery in Goso-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, a 38-day exhibition of folk paintings by artist Choi Ae-kyung titled “One Thread, One Point” will be held until January 21, 2024.
This is the eighth and final local artist spotlight exhibition of the year, showcasing about 30 humble and warm Korean paintings by Choi Ae-kyung, capturing “a precious and cherished feeling infused at the tip of a single brushstroke.”
The exhibition features folk paintings that inherit traditional themes and styles, with the artist’s unique sophisticated and elegant colors achieved by spreading the ink tones obtained from painting ink wash paintings into colored paintings.
Unlike other paintings, folk paintings are filled with meanings of affection and love. The artist’s graceful and delicate spirit, who painted each thread and point with time and devotion without letting the brush tip dry for many years, wishing to give the paintings to loved ones, is fully conveyed through the works.
Along with the exhibition, three specially made folk painting postcards will be offered free of charge in limited quantities to visitors of the gallery as a token of gratitude during the season of bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new year.
The curator in charge said, “Just as yesterday’s and today’s lives are not different, I hope this exhibition, which contains the same heartfelt wishes passed down from our ancestors to the present day, allows visitors to meet the ones they love and respect, unforgettable beautiful landscapes, and humble dreams together.”
Meanwhile, the Dalbit Gallery in Yeosu is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed for lunch from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and closed every Monday and during the New Year holidays. Admission to the exhibition is free.
