Gangnam-gu Enchanted by Korean Version of Times Square's Caravel Media Show

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will host the 2023 Seoul Media Art Week (SMAW), a special media show themed around Christmas, on 71 electronic billboards in the Trade Center area from the 19th to the 25th.

This area was designated in December 2016 as the nation’s first Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone, with 20 outdoor electronic billboards installed across 8 locations in the Samsung-dong Trade Center area. Organized by the Public-Private Joint Council for the Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone, Seoul Media Art Week plans to captivate domestic and international tourists with a dazzling display of lights using 17 outdoor and 54 indoor electronic billboards.

The 12-minute media work consists of a Christmas season show and a main show. The season show centers on celestial carol bells. Scenes such as heavenly bells falling to the ground, the bells being enveloped in radiant golden light transforming into starlight, and various Christmas objects dancing are vividly expressed using the anamorphic technique. The addition of orchestral carols further enhances the visual impact.

Additionally, the celestial bells featured in the video will be realized as physical lighting sculptures at K-pop Square (in front of Samsung Station Exit 6). A total of 50 light sculptures, including three large bells each 5 meters tall, small bells, lighting balls, and chrome balls, will be installed to create a fantastic carol bell plaza.

For the main show, six content partners including the Seoul Metropolitan Government (Seoul Light Trade Center), Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, CJ CGV, JoongAng Ilbo, Kakao Clippedrops, and Ray Village will participate to showcase works by leading domestic artists. The media works will start daily at 5:30 PM, 6:30 PM, 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9:30 PM, each lasting 12 minutes.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “Through a differentiated media show that can only be seen in Gangnam, we will transform the Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone area into a world-class media tourism destination.”
