Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Special Crackdown on Drunk Sailing During Year-End and New Year Period

Including Multi-Use Vessels Such as Fishing Boats and Passenger Ships

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) conducted a special crackdown on drunk navigation both at sea and on land targeting all vessels in the jurisdiction to prevent maritime accidents caused by drunk sailing during the year-end and New Year period.

According to Mokpo Maritime Police on the 13th, this special crackdown will be carried out for 23 days from the 15th of this month to January 7th of next year, following a publicity and guidance period from the 7th to the 14th.

The crackdown targets all vessels including fishing boats, multi-use vessels (oil and passenger ferries, passenger ships, fishing boats), water leisure equipment, and cargo ships.

Those caught navigating under the influence are defined by the Maritime Safety Act as having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.03% or higher, and depending on the concentration, they face penalties ranging from a minimum fine of 5 million KRW to imprisonment from more than 2 years up to 5 years, or fines between 20 million KRW and 30 million KRW.

The Maritime Police will conduct joint crackdowns in coordination with the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), patrol vessels, and branch offices, along with promotional activities such as electronic display boards and banner postings.

A Mokpo Maritime Police official stated, “We will continue enforcement and preventive activities to ensure that no drunk navigation accidents occur that cause significant damage to lives, property, and the environment.”
