Samsung Electronics to Launch Galaxy S24 Series Next Month
Possibility of Featuring Latest AI 'Gemini'
Samsung Electronics is expected to equip the Galaxy S24 series, set to be unveiled next month, with not only its own developed artificial intelligence (AI) but also the latest AI models from other companies.
According to the IT and telecommunications industry on the 13th, Samsung Electronics is reportedly pursuing a plan to embed its AI, 'Samsung Gauss,' alongside other companies' AI models as on-device AI in the Galaxy S24 series, scheduled for release on the 17th of next month.
On-device AI allows the device to collect information and process computations independently without connecting to the cloud. Since it does not transmit information to the cloud or go through a central server, it offers faster processing speeds and stronger security advantages.
After Samsung Electronics hinted at developing the Galaxy S24 as an on-device AI device during its Q3 earnings announcement at the end of October, the prevailing expectation was that only its own AI, Samsung Gauss, would be installed. However, recently, the trend is shifting toward incorporating multiple AI models simultaneously.
Accordingly, OpenAI's 'GPT-4' and Google's 'Gemini,' unveiled on the 6th, are being strongly considered as AI candidates to be installed together in the Galaxy S24 series. Especially considering that Google is a close partner with Samsung Electronics in the Android operating system, some speculate that the inclusion of Gemini in the Galaxy is only a matter of time.
Although the Galaxy S24 launch is just over a month away, AI models can be added relatively easily through firmware updates, so it is not expected to be a major obstacle.
OpenAI and its largest shareholder, Microsoft (MS), do not have their own smartphones, so cooperation with Samsung Electronics is expected to proceed without issues. If the latest AI models such as Gemini or GPT are additionally embedded, the functionality of the Galaxy S24 is expected to improve further.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is reportedly planning to hold an Unpacked event in San Jose, California, USA, on January 17 next year to unveil the 'Galaxy S24 series.' This will be the first time Samsung Electronics unveils a new product in January since the Galaxy S21 Unpacked in 2020. At that time, the event was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
