655 Households Fully Equipped with 'Openable Security Windows' Free of Charge After Complete Survey of Banjiha Houses
Windows Can Be Opened for Immediate Evacuation and Rescue in Emergencies Like Internal Flooding and Fire
Thorough Preparations Prevent Loss of Life and Property from Disasters, Ensuring Safety
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will strengthen the safety net for vulnerable groups by installing “openable security windows” in semi-basement houses, allowing residents to open the security bars and evacuate in case of flooding.
Fixed security bars can cause major casualties because windows cannot be opened to escape if the door is blocked by water pressure or fire. Accordingly, the district has installed and replaced “openable security windows” free of charge in semi-basement houses to ensure the safety of vulnerable residents and prevent casualties.
First, the district conducted a full survey of semi-basement houses and prioritized installing “openable security windows” in those occupied by people with severe disabilities, elderly residents, and children.
Next, for the remaining semi-basement houses, a visual inspection by architectural experts was conducted to classify the necessity of installation into four levels: “very necessary,” “moderate,” “slightly,” and “unnecessary.” For houses rated as “very necessary,” actual measurements such as the gap between the window frame and floor and road slope were taken before proceeding with installation.
Additionally, while installing the “openable security windows,” the district responded to inquiries and requests from nearby residents by inspecting the sites and guiding them through the application process, striving to ensure the safety of vulnerable households.
A resident who had an “openable security window” installed expressed satisfaction, saying, “It is more practical than the existing security bars, and I feel relieved knowing that we can respond quickly to fires or flooding.”
Meanwhile, to proactively prevent flood damage, the district is promoting ▲portable movable water barriers, installation of backflow preventers ▲flood warning and alert systems ▲and the Companion Partner service.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We installed ‘openable security windows’ in semi-basement houses to facilitate evacuation and rescue for vulnerable groups. We will do our utmost to protect the safety and property of residents and make Yeongdeungpo-gu a safe place free from disasters through thorough preparation.”
