No "Game Over"... Dongmyeong University’s First Domestic Game Department Partners with Neowiz for Talent Development

TU Game Challenge, Generous Support for Outstanding Student Development Teams

Do you know which university first established a department for nurturing game talent?

Dongmyung University (President Jeon Ho-hwan), the first among four-year universities to establish a Department of Game Studies, held a game challenge competition on the 8th to enhance the game development skills of its students.

In this competition, which encouraged students with prize money and gifts prepared jointly by the faculty of the department and Korea’s leading game company Neowiz, the grand prize was awarded to the team ‘3Drone,’ led by Choi Jun-yong (Game Engineering, 3rd year), for their horror action game ‘Unaccounted For.’ They received the Dongmyung University SW-Centered University Project Group Award along with a prize of 1.5 million KRW.

The excellence award with a prize of 1 million KRW went to Kang Myung-jun (Game Engineering, 3rd year). The honorable mentions (each with a prize of 500,000 KRW) were awarded to three teams: Nemobaji Sponge, led by Jeon Da-yeon (Game Engineering, 4th year); Quality Control, led by Jeon Jae-woo (Game Engineering, 3rd year); and Uptrend, led by Lee Jae-woo (Game Engineering, 2nd year).

All winning teams received as additional prizes the latest PlayStation 5 consoles and the popular console game ‘P’s False’ provided by Neowiz.

This game won three awards at Gamescom 2022, the first Korean game to do so, and took six awards including the grand prize at the ‘2023 Korea Game Awards.’

Neowiz also donated an additional five console game machines and copies of the game title ‘P’s False’ to support the establishment of a game experience room that Dongmyung University’s Department of Game Studies students can use collectively.

Both parties agreed to join hands and work together to nurture future game talent.

Hwang Sung-seop, Director at Neowiz, said, “The expansion of Dongmyung University’s Game Engineering Department into a full Department of Game Studies, which has been dedicated to nurturing game talent, is a very positive change for the future of the game industry. This was a large-scale event for a single department, and we will combine our efforts to achieve even greater results.”

Professor Kang Young-min, who prepared the competition, said, “The faculty of the Game Engineering Department have contributed in various ways to improve facilities, and the prize money for the competition was also generously donated by the faculty. We will spare no effort to support the students of the Department of Game Studies to grow into talented professionals in the game industry.”

Dongmyung University plans to expand the Department of Game Studies by including the Game Engineering Department and the Game Graphics Department to cultivate practical game developers capable of solving real-world problems.

As an innovative department, they have prepared full four-year tuition scholarships for all freshmen, and in 2023, they continued to facilitate meetings and communication between executives of major domestic game companies such as NCSoft, Nexon Korea, and Netmarble and the students.

Additionally, through this TU Game Challenge, they are concluding the year with a festival supporting game development talent in collaboration with Neowiz, a leader in Korean game content.
