Broadcast of Documentary on Depardieu Sexual Assault Scandal
G?rard Depardieu (74), known as a national actor of France, has been exposed for making misogynistic and obscene remarks during his visit to North Korea in 2018.
On the 7th (local time), the weekly investigative program of France's public broadcaster France 2 TV aired a documentary lasting about an hour, showing Depardieu attending the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the North Korean regime, the '9.9 Day' event, where he made sexual remarks while looking at a young girl.
Despite being aware of the filming, he continuously sexually harassed a North Korean female interpreter and did not hesitate to make sexual comments about a ten-year-old child riding a horse at the equestrian center.
Testimonies from women in the film industry, including actresses and directors who accused Depardieu of sexual assault, also followed.
Depardieu is currently under prosecution investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting an actress in her twenties. He was previously cleared due to insufficient evidence but was indicted in 2020 on the same charge and is undergoing reinvestigation. This case is still ongoing, and Depardieu has continued to be active in the film industry.
Then, in April, when the French investigative news website Mediapart reported the victim claims of thirteen women, Depardieu denied all allegations in an open letter sent to the daily newspaper Le Figaro in October, arguing that he is not a predator.
Depardieu actively worked in the film industry, winning the Best Actor award at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival for the movie Cyrano and being nominated for the Best Actor Oscar at the 1991 Academy Awards. In protest against the tax increase policy of the Fran?ois Hollande government, he acquired Russian citizenship in 2013.
That year, he made headlines by receiving a Russian passport directly from President Putin in Sochi, a famous resort on the Black Sea. Maintaining a "close friend" relationship with Putin, he fiercely criticized Putin as a "madman" after the invasion of Ukraine.
