Controversy Over Google AI 'Gemini' Demo Video... Performance Criticisms Follow

Gemini demonstration video revealed to have been pre-edited

Google recently unveiled its large language model (LLM) 'Gemini,' but controversies regarding its performance have followed. On the day Google revealed Gemini, it was revealed that the demonstration video shown during the presentation was pre-edited, and there were also criticisms that the answers to questions did not meet expectations.

On the 7th (local time), Google announced the launch of Gemini, calling it the most powerful AI model. During this process, a 6-minute demonstration video was released. The video attracted attention by showing a Gemini-based chatbot interacting with users and demonstrating its ability to recognize drawings and objects. For example, when a person drew a duck with a pen on paper, Gemini recognized it as a 'bird.'

In the video, Gemini appeared to provide perfect answers in a short time, but the video was pre-edited. Google explained, "The demonstration was not conducted in real-time but was created based on pre-prepared images and text prompts," adding, "It was shown as an example that Gemini can interact through multimodal capabilities."

US CNBC pointed out that earlier this year, Google faced criticism for providing incorrect answers during the demonstration of Bard, a ChatGPT competitor, and noted that this video reminded them of that incident.

There were also criticisms that Gemini failed to provide accurate answers to questions or avoided responding to controversial topics. Google released three versions of the Gemini model and integrated the general-purpose model (Pro) into the AI chatbot Bard. According to the US media Business Insider, Bard users reported that Bard struggled to answer questions about who won the Best Actor award at this year’s Oscars. They also added that Bard did not properly understand requests to respond in languages other than English.

When asked to provide updates on the war situation between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Bard reportedly responded, "Try searching on Google for the latest information," without providing specific answers. Business Insider pointed out that this contrasts with competitor chatbots like ChatGPT Pro and Microsoft (MS) Bing, which provide detailed responses.
