Gangnam-gu Produces Calendar Featuring Seasonal Foods and Recipes

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will post a calendar featuring seasonal foods and recipes for each month on the district website on the 11th to promote proper eating habits in the new year of Gapjin (甲辰年) 2024.

The "2024 Healthy Gangnam Seasonal Food Calendar" was created to revive the meaning of seasonal foods (시식, 時食) made uniquely with ingredients from the four seasons introduced in Dongguk Sesigi (東國歲時記), written by Hong Seok-mo in the 15th year of King Heonjong of Joseon (1849), and to help practice healthy traditional eating habits.

This year’s calendar has been further developed from last year’s seasonal ingredient calendar by including not only seasonal foods but also recipes. The selected monthly seasonal ingredients are lotus root (January), strawberry (February), mugwort (March), green peas (April), bamboo shoots (May), cucumber (June), eggplant (July), corn (August), oyster mushroom (September), taro (October), carrot (November), and tangerine (December). The front side of the calendar introduces four dishes made with that month’s seasonal ingredient, while the back side provides recipes so people can try making them themselves.

Starting from the 11th, anyone can download the calendar file (PDF version) from the district website and the "Gangnam-gu Public Health Center Nutrition Management Project" KakaoTalk channel. The file can be printed on paper or used as an online calendar on smartphones or computer screens.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “We created this calendar so that modern people, who often forget the seasons, can feel closer to seasonal foods that contain the nutrition of spring, summer, autumn, and winter.” He added, “Next year, we will continue to operate various programs to support the healthy and abundant eating habits of our residents.”
