On the 7th, Pohang City participated in the ‘2023 NEAR International Forum and the 14th Economic and Humanities Exchange Subcommittee’ held at the Lahan Hotel in Gyeongju, promoting Pohang’s excellent secondary battery industry ecosystem and development plans, and exploring ways to expand international exchange and cooperation for the development of the secondary battery industry among Northeast Asian local governments.

Pohang City Initiates International Cooperation with Northeast Asian Countries for Secondary Battery Industry Development Pohang City participated in the '2023 NEAR International Forum and the 14th Economic and Humanities Exchange Subcommittee' to engage in international cooperation for the development of the secondary battery industry with Northeast Asian countries.

The event, hosted by the Secretariat of the Northeast Asia Regional Association of Local Authorities (NEAR) and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, was attended by over 150 participants from five countries: Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and Mongolia. It proceeded in the order of expert sessions, special lectures, and local government sessions introducing key industries of each country under the theme “Cooperation Measures among Northeast Asian Local Governments in the Era of Great Transformation.”

On this day, Jeong Myeong-sook, Director of the Battery Advanced Industry Division of Pohang City, introduced Pohang’s excellent industrial conditions, including world-class differentiated infrastructure and corporate investment environment, as well as major policies promoted to establish the secondary battery industry ecosystem first in Korea during the local government session. She also explained the achievements so far, such as the designation of the secondary battery national advanced strategic industry specialized complex, and the future vision of Pohang in 2030, reborn through battery-based national development.

Following this, Pohang City held a meeting to explore cooperation measures in the secondary battery field with the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Pohang City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Baotou City shared the status of key local industries and major policies, agreeing to strengthen mutual exchange and cooperation to discover cooperative projects in the secondary battery sector.

The Inner Mongolia (內蒙古) Autonomous Region, located in northern China bordering Mongolia, is rich in mines and has developed a new materials industry centered on rare earths, steel, non-ferrous metals, and petrochemical materials. Baotou City, the largest industrial city in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is a major production area of rare earths, the core raw material for electric vehicles, and signed a letter of intent for exchange with Pohang City in 2009.

Pohang City has achieved remarkable results in the secondary battery industry by establishing a full-cycle secondary battery industrial ecosystem, securing world-class R&D infrastructure and experts, global logistics infrastructure, and attracting large-scale corporate investments.

Pohang has been continuously advancing efforts to strengthen national secondary battery industry competitiveness by attracting various national projects such as the battery recycling regulatory free zone, which was the first in the nation to be evaluated as an excellent special zone for four consecutive years, the secondary battery comprehensive management center, the post-use battery resource circulation cluster, and the inline automatic evaluation center. In July, Pohang was designated as a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex for secondary batteries, further solidifying its status.

Based on these achievements, Pohang plans to establish a global network and promote international cooperation projects in the secondary battery field, positioning itself as a global leading city with a super-gap in the secondary battery industry.

Jeong Myeong-sook, Director of the Battery Advanced Industry Division, said, “Through this international forum lecture, we were able to internationally showcase Pohang’s excellent industrial ecosystem and strengths as a K-battery leading city,” adding, “We will build a global cooperation network for secondary batteries not only with Northeast Asian regions such as China but also with major overseas countries, advancing as a global super-gap leading city.”
