The Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Seungho) summoned Kang, Lee's brother-in-law's wife, as a witness for questioning on the morning of the same day. This comes 50 days after the Democratic Party filed a complaint against Prosecutor Lee at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on October 18.
Kang reported to the office of Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Eui-gyeom allegations including Lee's false address registration, unauthorized access to criminal records, and attempts to cover up drug investigations involving his brother-in-law. The prosecution is reportedly verifying the overall circumstances of the various allegations raised by Kang.
At around 9:50 a.m. that day, Kang appeared at the prosecution office wearing a white coat and with a stern expression. When asked by reporters, "What will you testify about?" she did not respond. Ryu Jaeyul, a representative lawyer of the law firm Joongshim and Kang's legal representative (age 45, passed the 2nd bar exam), replied on her behalf, "We plan to fully cooperate to the best of our ability. We hope this case will be thoroughly investigated." Lawyer Ryu added, "(Kang) is in a very psychologically unstable state," and said, "We will coordinate today and submit all necessary materials for the investigation."
The allegations against Prosecutor Lee were first raised by lawmaker Kim during the National Assembly audit in October. Based on Kang's report, Kim claimed that Lee, at the request of his brother-in-law who operates the Yongin CC golf course, accessed criminal records of golf course employees without authorization and provided conveniences when senior and junior prosecutors used the golf course.
On December 24, 2020, allegations were also raised that Lee held a gathering with family and acquaintances through a vice chairman of a conglomerate he was investigating at the Elysian Gangchon Resort in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. Furthermore, on the 21st of last month, Kang appeared on the YouTube channel "Kim Eo-jun's Humility is Difficult News Factory," raising suspicions about her husband's drug use and the cover-up of the police investigation, suggesting that Prosecutor Lee's influence was behind it.
At the time the allegations surfaced, Prosecutor Lee was serving as the second deputy chief at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, leading investigations related to the Ssangbangwool Group's alleged illegal remittances to North Korea and matters involving Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung.
On the 20th of last month, the prosecution began a forced investigation by conducting raids on Yongin CC golf course and Elysian Gangchon Resort. Prosecutor Lee was also reassigned as acting prosecutor at the Daejeon High Prosecutors' Office. The Democratic Party submitted an impeachment motion against Prosecutor Lee to the National Assembly on the 1st, along with Prosecutor Son Junsung, who is under suspicion of 'alleged complaint manipulation.' The impeachment motion was passed and forwarded to the Constitutional Court.
