Ulsan City Selected as 'Excellent Urban Forest' in Climate Response Urban Forest Category
'Urban Wind Path Forest' Praised for Specialized Spaces in Forest and Street Tree Sections
Ulsan City has won a meaningful award from a national institution for the forest it created in the city to respond to the climate crisis.
On the 7th, Ulsan City announced that it received the Excellence Award in the Climate Response Urban Forest category at the ‘2023 Green City Best Practices Contest’ hosted by the Korea Forest Service.
Started by the Korea Forest Service in 2007, the ‘Green City Best Practices Contest’ selects and awards outstanding cases of urban forests and street trees that are ecologically designed and managed to function well. It also aims to encourage healthy competition among local governments to improve project quality and widely promote the necessity of urban forests.
An urban forest refers to a connected forest that can guide and diffuse fresh and clean air from forests inside and outside the city center into the urban area.
This year, 30 excellent cases were submitted from cities and provinces nationwide, and through document screening and expert on-site evaluation, Ulsan City’s ‘Ujeong Innovation City Urban Wind Path Forest’ was selected as an excellent forest in the climate response urban forest category.
This forest is an urban forest created in 2022 on public green spaces along the streets of Ujeong Innovation City in Jung-gu, Ulsan. Experts who participated in the on-site evaluation praised it for diversely organizing the street space developed as an innovation city into specialized sections and forming a stable canopy layer.
An official from Ulsan City said, “We will continue to strive to create an environment where citizens can live with peace of mind from fine dust through the creation of carbon-neutral urban forests.”
