The Russian Federation Council has tentatively set the date for the next presidential election as March 17 next year and is expected to finalize it after deliberation.
According to Interfax news agency on the 6th (local time), Andrey Klishas, chairman of the Federation Council's Constitutional Committee, stated on Telegram that "the agenda to designate March 17 as the election day will be submitted and reviewed at the Federation Council plenary session tomorrow (the 7th)." According to Russian election law, the Federation Council must set and announce the election date 90 to 100 days before the voting day.
Accordingly, attention is also focused on Vladimir Putin's declaration of candidacy for the presidential election. President Putin mentioned that he would consider the possibility of running after the election schedule is set. If President Putin succeeds in his re-election in next year's presidential election, he will be able to extend his term by six more years until 2030. Since December 31, 1999, when he assumed the role of acting president following the resignation of former President Boris Yeltsin, he has maintained power as either president or prime minister.
The Russian Central Election Commission plans to hold a meeting on the 8th to commence the presidential campaign. The commission will also decide whether to conduct voting over three days.
