In particular, the scale of the special grants in the second half of this year is the largest ever among the regular grant amounts, which have been between 3 billion and 8 billion KRW annually.

It is expected to be a great help to Jeonnam Province’s finances, which are already strained due to reduced resources caused by tax revenue shortfalls.

This achievement is the result of strong recommendations by Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok and National Assembly Budget and Accounts Committee member Seo Sam-seok to the central government, urging special attention to the livelihood budget as many urgent project funds were invested during the successful promotion of the 104th National Sports Festival, the 43rd National Para Games, and the Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo this year.

The special grants secured this time will be used as a budget to lay the foundation for guaranteeing the basic rights of residents and making Jeonnam a good place to live anywhere, focusing on ‘regional balanced development through expansion of transportation networks in island areas,’ ‘establishment of community safety nets,’ and ‘elimination of welfare blind spots.’

The main detailed items include ▲5.2 billion KRW for local road risk road maintenance projects to create a safe road environment through landslide risk slope maintenance and alignment improvement ▲4.2 billion KRW for bridge seismic reinforcement and reconstruction projects to secure the function and safety of facilities by seismic reinforcement of key important bridges with high usage ▲3 billion KRW for river disaster prevention projects to minimize flood damage caused by river overflow and ensure safe living for local residents ▲1 billion KRW for the construction of approach bridges to secure safe passage rights for residents.

Also included are ▲1.8 billion KRW for Jeonnam Province welfare facility function enhancement projects to improve aging facilities such as workshops for the disabled and child protection institutions ▲1 billion KRW for the creation of the Namdo Uibyung History Museum, where the 500-year history of the righteous army can be viewed in one place at a glance ▲1 billion KRW for the construction of a regional specialized fruit support center to foster subtropical specialty crops as differentiated income sources.

Jeonnam Province Budget Officer Jeong Hyun-gu said, “We will continue to secure as much special grants as possible to give more momentum to various urgent projects being promoted in Jeonnam Province and do our best to revive the local economy amid the livelihood crisis.”
