Gwanak-gu Health Center Offers Free Anonymous AIDS Testing Year-Round
AIDS is a disease that occurs as the immune system of a person infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, 'HIV,' becomes compromised. According to the '2022 HIV/AIDS Report' published by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in June, there were 1,066 new patients in 2022, an increase of 91 from 2021, with the age groups of people in their 30s accounting for 34.9% and those in their 20s 31.5%.
In response, Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) will conduct intensive publicity on AIDS prevention and awareness improvement during AIDS Prevention Week from December 1 to December 7, coinciding with the 36th World AIDS Day.
During this period, the district is promoting AIDS testing and prevention methods intensively through various channels such as its website, social media, and offline platforms under the slogan "AIDS TO ZERO: Knowing AIDS from A to Z leads to zero!" with themes including ▲ Zero anxiety through testing! ▲ Zero risk through prevention! ▲ Zero prejudice through fact-checking!
Additionally, the district will work to improve residents' awareness of AIDS by informing them about the main routes of infection, behavioral guidelines if infection is suspected, and the 'U=U' (Undetectable = Untransmittable) status, which means that even if infected, the virus is not transmitted when it is undetectable.
The Gwanak-gu Public Health Center offers free anonymous AIDS testing to anyone. If a positive diagnosis is confirmed, the center connects patients to medical institutions for appropriate treatment and provides services such as counseling and financial support for treatment costs.
A representative from the Gwanak-gu Public Health Center stated, "We will minimize the spread of AIDS by facilitating prompt testing and appropriate treatment for infected individuals," and added, "We will continue to strive for AIDS prevention and the improvement of the rights of infected individuals through this publicity campaign and beyond."
