"Strengthening Safety for Joseon Industry Workers"
A new safety management model has been developed to protect the health and lives of shipbuilding workers.
The Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA), led by Director Gong Heung-du, announced on the 6th that the Shipbuilding Accident Prevention Center recently developed the "2023 Quality Inspector Safety Management Model" for those working in the shipbuilding industry.
Since 2015, KOSHA has prioritized 20 high-risk occupations in shipbuilding (such as welders, commissioning engineers, and pipefitters) and annually developed and distributed safety management models for two occupations based on risk assessments, work safety standards, and accident statistics.
As a result of these efforts, a clear decline in the number of fatalities has been observed since the first year of safety management model development in 2015. The number of fatal accidents decreased from 25 in 2015 to 11 in 2022.
Gong Heung-du, Director of KOSHA Busan Regional Headquarters, emphasized, "Improving safety and health technology is crucial to reducing fatal accidents in shipbuilding," and added, "Workplaces should actively utilize the shipbuilding safety management models tailored to each occupation."
In addition, KOSHA Busan Regional Headquarters (Shipbuilding Accident Prevention Center) plays a key role as a hub for preventing industrial accidents in shipbuilding by conducting various programs such as safety and health level evaluations for mutual cooperation between primary and subcontractors, technical guidance, and regional safety and health councils, leading the promotion of a safety culture in the shipbuilding industry.
