Won Hee-ryong Attends Conservative Rally Led by Jeon Kwang-hoon, Sparking Controversy
Lee Yang-su: "Only Shared Testimony... Stop Trying to Tarnish"
Lee Yang-su, the senior deputy floor leader of the People Power Party, stated that Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong was unaware that Pastor Jeon Gwang-hoon of the far-right Sarang Jeil Church, who led the rally on the 4th, would be present.
On the 6th, Lee said on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show,' "Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongbuk told Minister Won that there is a Gyeongbuk region elders' association and asked him to come and join. Minister Won thought he only needed to give a testimony, so he went," explaining the situation.
Lee emphasized again, "It is wrong to try to link Pastor Jeon and Minister Won to find fault. He never thought about doing anything together with Pastor Jeon there, nor did he know he would be coming."
Minister Won attended the conservative religious rally centered around Pastor Jeon as his first destination on the 4th, the day his successor was appointed. At the event, Minister Won hinted at his intention to run in next year's general election, saying, "I will do what I must in matters concerning the fate of the nation ahead."
Pastor Jeon also attended the rally that day and praised Minister Won, saying, "Wow, Won Hee-ryong’s testimony is really good. Usually, I don’t like it, but this was very impressive."
Regarding this, Park Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized in a written briefing on the 5th, "It is utterly shameful that a minister of a country rushed to the side of a far-right pastor as soon as his term ended."
