With the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) significantly impacting the economy, society, and industry, an association has been launched to lead the creation of a Korean-style generative AI.

"Warning Issued: Generative AI Requires Control Like Nuclear Technology... KGAF Launched"

On the 4th, the Korea Generative AI Foundation (KGAF) held its inauguration ceremony at the law firm Yulchon located in Samseong-dong, Seoul. Over 100 members from various fields, including AI companies, local governments (Daegu City), medical institutions (Boramae Hospital), and educational institutions (KAIST), gathered with a shared purpose.

Song Se-kyung, the inaugural president of KGAF, expressed his commitment to helping build industrial competitiveness through AI and actively utilizing collective intelligence. He specifically stated that efforts will be concentrated until 2030 to create high value-added new industries, and a talent development program is planned for next year.

He urged the government to "provide guidelines rather than regulations to create an environment where work can be focused," emphasizing that "we must balance the rapid pace of technology with thoughtful consideration of humanity."

Some KGAF member companies are conducting joint projects utilizing AI in medical work. Seoul Boramae Hospital, the small and medium enterprise 'Atoresearch,' and the startup 'ascleAI' have joined forces to attempt integrating generative AI into electronic medical records (EMR).

Yoon Se-ri, honorary representative lawyer of Yulchon and advisor to KGAF, expressed the foundation's ambition, saying, "KGAF plans to carry out various activities including fostering the AI ecosystem, talent development, research and development, infrastructure acquisition, and commercialization support."

However, she also expressed concerns, stating, "I worry about how AI industry development will affect human life and mind," and added, "It is hard to dismiss concerns that the fields where AI technology is most utilized might be war and crime."

She urged, "While pursuing AI development, it is necessary to maintain a balanced stance that controls it like nuclear technology."

In his congratulatory remarks, Park Yoon-gyu, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "Starting next year, 900 billion won will be invested to promote AI in everyday life nationwide," and added, "I hope KGAF will fulfill its role as a focal point representing the voices of the private sector and industry."

Ko Jin, chairman of the Digital Platform Government Committee, stated, "The launch of KGAF, which brings together domestic AI experts and startups with the goal of building a private-sector-led generative AI ecosystem, is timely," and urged, "Please contribute to making the Republic of Korea a model country for artificial intelligence."
