Terrascience Acquires Patent Technology for Energy Recovery from Environmental Waste Incineration

Terra Science announced on the 4th that it has acquired patented technology for incinerating environmental waste and converting it into energy from the eco-friendly incineration company CDS Technology.

Accordingly, Terra Science explained that, following its entry into the lithium extraction and production business based on technology in the existing hydraulic valve sector, it can now expect solid growth by diversifying its business structure into eco-friendly sectors such as environmental and waste energy conversion using incinerators.

CDS Technology holds patented technology that drastically combusts various wastes to extract energy. They stated that incinerators made with this technology have already been supplied and installed not only domestically but also overseas. Additionally, they developed a regenerative combustion incinerator independently without the need for burners, which can remove carcinogens, odors, pollution, and fine dust generated in the air at industrial sites during waste incineration.

Terra Science sold its subsidiary Terra Technos to POSCO Holdings, the holding company of POSCO, for approximately 47.8 billion KRW last year and continues R&D with POSCO in this field.

Through the transfer of patented technology, Terra Science stated that it has entered an eco-friendly technology-based business that perfectly incinerates the most hazardous and socially problematic environmental wastes such as construction, chemical, medical, and animal wastes, while also obtaining renewable energy like hydrogen in the process.

This eco-friendly technology is expected to activate domestic and international sales of small-scale incineration facilities operated by the government and local governments, contributing to Terra Science’s profitability improvement. The company plans to internalize core technologies in the waste resource energy conversion field based on effective acquisition of source technologies.

The renewable energy business sector is included in Terra Science’s articles of incorporation, and the company anticipates that the air environment-related sector, waste energy conversion, and waste treatment market will be long-term stable growth industries.

According to the Ministry of Environment’s environmental industry statistical survey, the sales of the domestic environmental industry grew about fivefold from approximately 21 trillion KRW in 2004 to about 101 trillion KRW in 2021. In particular, a report published by Samjong KPMG indicated that the corporate value of domestic waste treatment companies increased by 280% over the past three years, and the growth trend is expected to continue, with the domestic market size projected to reach 23.7 trillion KRW by 2025.

Especially due to external factors such as strengthened domestic and international environmental regulations, the spread of ESG management, international responses to global warming, and increased investments postponed during the COVID-19 period, the domestic environmental industry is expected to show significant growth in areas such as air quality improvement, marine waste treatment, and waste energy conversion.

A Terra Science official said, "The waste treatment market can not only promote the company’s sustainable growth but also maximize shareholder and corporate value in line with the era’s shift toward ESG management. The source technologies related to waste resource treatment and energy conversion are expected to play a major role in the company’s growth, sales scale, and profitability enhancement."
