Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon posted a message and photo on his SNS after watching the movie Seoul's Spring on the 3rd.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon expressed his lament that those who commit evil deeds live long and well, quoting Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian" after watching the film "Spring in Seoul," which has surpassed 3 million viewers.
Governor Kim wrote late at night on his social media on the 3rd, saying, "I watched the movie 'Spring in Seoul' over the weekend," and introduced it as "dealing with a military rebellion sparked to satisfy power and ambition."
He continued, "(The military rebellion led by Chun Doo-hwan's faction, which seized power in May 1980) violently suppressed the Gwangju Democratization Movement, blocking the true spring," adding, "I felt uncomfortable and even angry throughout the movie."
He then explained, "In the 'Biographies of Bai Yi' from the Records of the Grand Historian, there is a lament by the author Sima Qian," and said, "It describes how those who commit evil deeds live long lives while the noble ones live hard lives and die young, citing examples of Bai Yi and Shu Zhi, who starved to death for loyalty, and the notorious thief Du Cheok."
Furthermore, he emphasized, "(This book) says, 'Only when the cold season comes do we realize that the pine and the nut pine do not wither,'" and stressed, "The world is chaotic and the economy is difficult, but our society needs more pine and nut pines that do not wither."
The film Spring in Seoul meticulously depicts the process from the assassination of former President Park Chung-hee by former Central Intelligence Agency Director Kim Jae-gyu at his residence in Gungjeong-dong on October 26, 1979, to the military faction led by then Security Commandant Chun Doo-hwan, centered around the Hanahoe group within the military, bullying Army Chief of Staff and Martial Law Commander Jeong Seung-hwa and President Choi Kyu-hah to seize power by December 12 of the same year.
