Kim Seon-jo (56), Deputy Mayor of Daegu, will take office on the 4th. The new Deputy Mayor Kim Seon-jo will skip the inauguration ceremony, receive his appointment letter at the Sangyeok Office, and start his first day by attending an executive meeting presided over by Mayor Hong Jun-pyo.
Deputy Mayor Kim is originally from Busan and graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Philosophy. He entered public service in April 1994 after passing the 37th Administrative Examination. He has served in various positions including at the Ministry of Environment, Director of Safety Administration Bureau in Ulsan City, Deputy District Mayor of Jung and Dong Districts in Ulsan, Director of Regional Development at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Planning and Coordination Director of Ulsan City and Busan City, and Balanced Development Officer at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Deputy Mayor Kim has a particularly deep connection with Daegu. In 1995, he was first assigned to the Daegu Regional Environmental Office of the Ministry of Environment and worked there for a year. During that time, he met his current spouse in Daegu, and since his in-laws live there, he frequently visited Daegu, which gradually became a comfortable place like his hometown.
Based on his extensive experience in both central and local administration, he plans to do his utmost to strengthen welfare for the vulnerable, reinforce public medical infrastructure, and establish a meticulous social safety net for disaster and accident prevention amid difficult economic and financial conditions. He will also fully prepare to ensure that the Daegu Marathon and the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships are held at the highest global standards, dedicating himself to revitalizing local culture, sports, and tourism.
Deputy Mayor Kim Seon-jo will first visit the Daegu City Council to request active cooperation for resolving administrative issues and reviewing the 2024 budget proposal, then spend time communicating with staff by visiting all departments at the Dongin and Sangyeok offices of Daegu City.
Kim Seon-jo, Deputy Mayor of Daegu, said, "I will devote my experience and expertise in metropolitan administration and regional balanced development to restoring Daegu’s glory as one of South Korea’s top three cities." He added, "Especially as Deputy Mayor, I will do my utmost to create a ‘Powerful Daegu full of freedom and vitality’ and to achieve ‘Daegu’s rise’ standing tall on the Korean Peninsula and in the world."
