According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on the 3rd, the number of reported norovirus infection cases has nearly doubled in a month. From October 15-21, there were 29 cases → October 22-28, 31 cases → October 29-November 4, 41 cases → November 5-11, 49 cases → November 12-18, 57 cases. In particular, infants and young children aged 0-6 accounted for the largest proportion at 38.6% of the total cases.

Norovirus typically occurs intensively from November to April of the following year. Unlike other food poisoning viruses, norovirus can survive even at minus 20℃. Foods contaminated with norovirus do not have significantly different smell or taste, making infection more likely.

The main infection routes are consumption of contaminated water, shellfish, and other foods. Transmission through secretions of infected patients is also possible. Symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea appear within 12 to 48 hours after infection, and depending on the person, abdominal pain, chills, and fever may also occur. In infants and young children, severe dehydration can be dangerous.

For prevention, wash hands with soap for more than 30 seconds, wash ingredients under running water, and cook food thoroughly at 85℃ or higher for at least one minute. Avoid eating raw shellfish such as clams and oysters during winter. Groundwater should be boiled before drinking.

If infected with norovirus, it is recommended to rest for up to 48 hours after symptoms disappear. Living spaces should be separated from other family members. When using the bathroom, close the toilet lid before flushing after defecation to prevent the spread of norovirus.

Since norovirus cases are increasing especially among infants and young children, it is necessary to follow hygiene rules at home, childcare facilities, and other related institutions.
