Strong Winds Cause Sharp Drop in Feels-Like Temperature
On Saturday the 2nd, most regions nationwide will start the morning temperatures below freezing, continuing the cold weather.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, morning temperatures nationwide on this day will range from -10°C to 3°C, similar to or slightly higher than yesterday. As of 8 a.m., temperatures are -2°C in Seoul, -0.8°C in Incheon, -1.5°C in Daejeon, 1.1°C in Gwangju, -3°C in Daegu, -0.1°C in Ulsan, and -0.5°C in Busan. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to be similar to yesterday, between 5°C and 11°C. However, even as temperatures rise, strong winds will make the perceived temperature feel colder.
From the night of this day through the early morning of the 3rd, very strong winds with gusts exceeding 90 km/h (25 m/s) are expected in the mountainous areas of Gangwon and northeastern mountainous areas of Gyeongbuk. Strong winds with gusts over 55 km/h (15 m/s) are also expected along the east coast of Gangwon and the northern east coast of Gyeongbuk.
Additionally, due to a pressure trough passing north of the country, snow or rain will fall in northern Gyeonggi, central and northern inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon. Expected snowfall amounts are less than 1 cm in northeastern Gyeonggi and between 1 and 3 cm in central and northern inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon. Rainfall in northern Gyeonggi is expected to be less than 1 mm.
Elsewhere, in the metropolitan area, southern inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, central and northern east coast of Gangwon, Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, and northern inland areas of Gyeongbuk, light rain droplets less than 0.1 mm or snow less than 0.1 cm may fall in some places.
Dry weather warnings have been issued for Yeongdong in Gangwon, coastal areas of Gyeongsang region, and northeastern mountainous areas of Gyeongbuk, where the atmosphere will remain very dry for the time being. The atmosphere will also be dry in Yeongseo of Gangwon and other parts of the Gyeongsang region. With strong winds blowing, small sparks can lead to large fires, so special caution against fire is required.
From the night of this day, very strong winds and very high waves are expected in the central offshore waters of the East Sea and the northern offshore waters of the southern East Sea, so vessels navigating these waters should exercise caution.
On Sunday the 3rd, morning low temperatures are forecasted between -8°C and 5°C, and daytime temperatures between 3°C and 12°C. With a cold wave warning in effect for inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, temperatures will remain slightly below average until tomorrow, continuing the cold conditions.
