Appealing Yeosu for Climate Change Response, Promoting COP33 Yeosu Hosting
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) has launched a promotional campaign in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), where the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) is being held, to attract COP33 to the South Coast and South Central Region.
According to the city, the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) is taking place from the 30th of last month until the 12th of next month.
On the 29th, Yeosu City dispatched a delegation of five members, including Vice Mayor Kim Jong-gi, to the UAE (Dubai), where COP28 is being held.
The city delegation attended the opening ceremony of COP28 held today, engaged in meetings with related organizations to understand global climate change response trends, and participated in various climate change sessions aimed at establishing Yeosu City's 2050 carbon neutrality policy.
The delegation plans to promote Yeosu as a leading city in climate change response, having successfully hosted the 2012 Yeosu World Expo and the 2021 Urban Environmental Agreement (UEA) Yeosu Summit, while appealing for support and hosting of COP33 in the South Coast and South Central Region.
On the second day of COP28, the delegation will participate in an international forum co-hosted with Jeollanam-do at the 28th Conference Blue Zone (Korea Promotion Pavilion) under the theme "Characteristics of Jeollanam-do Coastal Ecosystems and Carbon Neutrality Potential."
Starting with the opening remarks by Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, domestic and international experts and officials will attend. The forum will be chaired by Park Yeon-hee, head of the ICLEI Korea Office (Local Governments for Sustainability), followed by a keynote presentation by Ahn Sang-hyun, Director of the Jeollanam-do Environment and Forestry Bureau. Panelists including Kim Chan-woo, former Climate Change Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Kwon Bong-oh, professor at Gunsan University, will engage in discussions focusing on Jeollanam-do’s coastal ecosystems, carbon neutrality, and the bid to host COP33 in the South Coast and South Central Region.
On the 2nd, the delegation will hold meetings with the head of the ICLEI Korea Office regarding the hosting of international climate change conferences next year. On the 3rd, they plan to visit the COP28 conference venue, which utilizes the Expo City space originally used for the 2020 Dubai Expo, to study post-event utilization cases of the expo site.
Vice Mayor Kim Jong-gi stated, “The 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, now in its 28th year, is one of the most important events where 198 countries participate as parties to discuss humanity’s efforts to respond to climate change. We will express the firm determination of our citizens to attract COP33 to the South Coast and South Central Region centered on Yeosu at this conference.”
