Press Conference on Position Announcement on the 1st
"We Will Fight Against Acts Undermining the Constitutional Order"
"We Will Play a Role for the Success of the Yoon Government"
Lee Dong-kwan, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, officially announced his resignation on the 1st ahead of the National Assembly's impeachment vote. He strongly criticized the opposition, saying, "They are abusing the National Assembly's authority and recklessly issuing impeachments."
On the same day, Chairman Lee held a press conference at the Government Complex Gwacheon and said, "As of today, I resign from the position of Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission," adding, "This is neither due to pressure from the ruling party nor a political trick as claimed by the opposition." He further stated, "It is solely out of loyalty to the country and the appointing authority, the President."
He explained, "If the impeachment motion proceeds, it is uncertain how many months it will take until the judgment is made," and added, "During that time, the Korea Communications Commission will effectively be in a vegetative state, and the National Assembly will be paralyzed amid the ruling and opposition parties' disputes. It is the duty of a public official to avoid this situation even if it means sacrificing myself."
He continued, "The public is already well aware of the unfairness of the impeachment pushed by the major opposition party," emphasizing, "I will continue to expose the illegitimacy of the Democratic Party's abuse of constitutional order by recklessly issuing impeachments through the abuse of the National Assembly's authority and fight against it."
Finally, he stated, "Wherever I am, I will do my part for South Korea's leap to becoming a global media powerhouse and the success of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration," and added, "The train of media normalization will continue to run."
Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol accepted Chairman Lee's resignation. It was reported that Chairman Lee personally called President Yoon the day before to express his voluntary resignation.
