Korea Western Power has launched a campaign to prevent and eradicate illegal drug use as part of its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) improvement activities in cooperation with local law enforcement and medical institutions.
On the 1st, Western Power distributed promotional materials and warming supplies near its headquarters in Taean, Chungnam, to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal drug use and distribution.
About 20 people, including Western Power employees, Shin Moon-woong, Western Power’s Integrity Citizen Auditor, officials from Taean Police Station, and Taean County Health and Medical Center, urged residents and tourists at the Taean County Public Bus Terminal and surrounding commercial areas to be vigilant about drug addiction and drug misuse.
Lee Sang-ro, Western Power’s Standing Auditor, said, "With the lifting of COVID-19 quarantine measures, domestic and international exchanges have surged, increasing the possibility of drug exposure through food and other means. We ask everyone to correctly understand drugs, acquire accurate information to protect themselves, and ultimately participate in cooperation for the safety of the local community."
According to the monthly drug trends report published by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, as of August, drug crimes in the Daejeon and Chungnam regions accounted for 5.6% of all drug crimes nationwide, maintaining a relatively low level compared to other metropolitan areas. However, recent drug smuggling and illegal use have emerged as social issues, making the situation far from reassuring.
In response, Western Power has adopted the campaign slogan "A Healthy Society Without Drugs, Stronger Us" and is focusing on prevention-centered education and promotional activities. On the 28th of last month, it participated in the "2023 Taean Student Arts Club Festival" hosted by the Taean Office of Education, conducting a campaign to prevent illegal drug use targeting youth and parents.
A Western Power official stated, "As a public institution’s internal audit body, we will faithfully perform our unique role while continuously carrying out ESG management practices for the local community."
