"Direct Visit to Residents' Request for 'Dongcheon-dong Street Environment Improvement'
On-site Inspection and Enhancement of Park Crime Prevention Facilities"
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, continues his series of on-site visits despite the cold weather. With the belief that "the answer lies on-site," he is determined to personally verify residents' complaints and find solutions.
On the afternoon of the 30th, despite subzero temperatures, Mayor Lee visited the Nonghyup Intersection in Dongcheon-dong, Suji-gu, along with city officials. Although it was not originally scheduled, this visit was prompted by residents' recent concerns that "the utility poles have deformed into abnormal shapes and too many wires are tangled, making it look dangerous."

The section including the utility poles in question had previously been submitted by the city to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for an underground cable project in 2021 and earlier this year, but it was not approved. After inspecting the site and meeting with residents, Mayor Lee stated, "We cannot just wait indefinitely for the undergrounding project to be approved, so we will first maintain the aerial cables and continue to request KEPCO to carry out the undergrounding work."
The city plans to reselect 4 to 5 locations, including this section, that require undergrounding and reapply for the project to KEPCO by May next year.
Mayor Lee then walked to a road in front of a daily necessities store about five minutes away to conduct a direct inspection. This area frequently receives complaints about pedestrians being inconvenienced due to illegal parking on sidewalks by vehicles using the roadside stores.
After assessing the situation and surrounding traffic conditions, Mayor Lee said, "The parking lot entrance is unclear, and the road is narrow, so many vehicles are entering and exiting onto the sidewalk. Raising the sidewalk curb could pose accident risks, so we should strengthen vehicle monitoring through CCTV installation and discuss securing parking spaces with the store as a long-term solution."
A city official responded, "To prevent inconvenience to pedestrians, illegally parked vehicles will be monitored using mobile CCTV vehicles, and fixed CCTV cameras will be installed next year with the supplementary budget."
Mayor Lee also visited the walking paths along Songgok-ro and Gogi-ro 45beon-gil, where sidewalk maintenance work is underway, to inspect the site and give instructions for improvements.
On the same day, Mayor Lee visited the Pungdeokcheon-dong area in Suji-gu, where 'Crime Prevention and Life Safety Facility Standard Design (Life Safety Design)' facilities were pilot-installed. About 30 people participated in the inspection, including An Gi-seung, Chief of Yongin Fire Station; Lee Jong-gil, Chief of Yongin Western Police Station; Lee Hyung-beom, Head of Suji District Office; Jang Jeong-sun, City Council member; residents of Pungdeokcheon 1-dong; and city officials.

Mayor Lee toured Pungdeokcheon Small Park, Munjeong Children's Park, and Munjeong Middle School with residents, checking whether emergency bells, emergency fire extinguisher boxes, and safe return home route signs were properly installed and whether there were any inconveniences or difficulties in their use.
Mayor Lee personally tested the emergency bells and fire extinguishers installed in the parks to check for any issues, and also suggested adjusting the height of the anti-adhesive sheets and guide signs for the safe return home route created in the alleyways to be at children's eye level.
Mayor Lee said, "We will identify more areas vulnerable to crime or disasters so that citizens can live more safely and install facilities related to life safety design."
