A 70-year-old woman in Uganda, Africa, has become a sensation after giving birth to twins.

According to major foreign media reports on the 1st (local time), Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman living in Masaka, Uganda, gave birth to twin boy and girl via cesarean section at a hospital in the capital city, Kampala, on the 29th of last month.

Dr. Edward Tamale Salile, who oversaw the pregnancy and delivery, said, "It is an astonishing achievement for a 70-year-old woman, the oldest mother in Africa, to give birth to twins," adding, "The mother and babies are still receiving treatment at the hospital, but their health condition is good."

Namukwaya, who also gave birth to a daughter three years ago in 2020, conceived the twins through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

She expressed her feelings, saying, "There is no way to express the joy of this moment," and added, "A miracle happened where I gave birth to twins at the age of 70, an age when pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting are thought to be impossible."

Namukwaya had no children with her first husband, who passed away in 1992, and later met her current partner in 1996.

Namukwaya said that since her partner found out about the twin pregnancy, he has not contacted her, possibly due to a sense of responsibility for raising the children, explaining, "Men probably do not want to hear that they have more than one child."

It is not known whether Namukwaya received donated eggs or successfully conceived and gave birth using her own eggs frozen when she was younger.
