Gwanak-gu Authorized Street Vendors Strive to Create a Pleasant and Safe Pedestrian Environment

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is making various efforts to create a safe and pleasant street environment.

Street vendors and business facilities on sidewalks can lead to major accidents threatening pedestrian safety in the event of electrical or gas incidents, so thorough safety management is necessary.

Accordingly, the district is continuously working to prevent safety accidents and improve the walking environment by conducting a full survey of permitted street vendors, improving youth-harmful environments, and carrying out special maintenance of items stored around sidewalks.

In addition, on November 29, the district held a safety education session at the Gwanak-gu Office auditorium for 110 permitted street vendor operators in the district (▲67 street vendors ▲43 sidewalk business facilities).

The main education topics included ▲gas and electrical accident prevention training ▲guidance on operator compliance requirements.

Experts in related fields were invited as instructors to provide guidance on safety measures, focusing on LPG gas accident cases and electric shock accident cases.

Also, as part of operator compliance, time was spent reviewing major environmental maintenance complaints such as resale, subleasing, and placing goods on sidewalks.

Mayor Park Jun-hee of Gwanak-gu also attended the training and said, "To prevent safety accidents, voluntary and active cooperation from permitted street vendor operators is necessary," adding, "The district will do its best to coexist with permitted street vendors through systematic education and management operations and to create a safe walking environment for residents."

Meanwhile, in September, the district established the ‘Shindaebang Station Street Vendor Specialized Street Development Basic Plan’ to clean up illegal street vendors near Shindaebang Station and create a pedestrian-friendly specialized street.

With a total project cost of 300 million KRW, full-scale specialized street development is planned to begin in January next year.

The main contents include ▲installation of CCTV (closed-circuit) to prevent safety accidents such as fires ▲maintenance of electrical wiring ▲reduction of large street vendor areas ▲adjustment of street vendor locations. In particular, after reducing the area of large street vendors, a communal resting area will be installed in the reduced space to restore the public nature of the road and support the creation of a street where residents and street vendors coexist.

Going forward, the district will continue to make every effort to secure safe pedestrian rights for residents while coexisting with street vendors and sidewalk business facilities in Gwanak-gu.
