S-Plus Comtec Develops Battery Thermal Runaway Delay Material... Enhancing Secondary Battery Safety Before and after the flame test of the flame-retardant sheet

Composite material developer S-Plus Comtec announced on the 30th that it has developed a flame-retardant and insulating sheet to delay thermal runaway in automotive batteries.

The 1.2mm-thick sheet withstood flame tests at temperatures above 1200℃ for more than 30 minutes. The temperature on the opposite side of the sheet exposed to the flame was confirmed not to exceed 700℃. After the flame test, the sheet material showed no melting, flow, or perforation.

S-Plus Comtec designed the sheet type to be applied between cells to secure time for driver evacuation and fire suppression in case of fire in electric vehicle batteries. It can also be applied to modules and battery packs. Electric vehicle batteries are at risk of fire due to various causes such as overcharging of battery cells, contraction and expansion from charging and discharging, and impacts during driving.

For mass production of the material, three types have been branded according to the characteristics of flame-retardant sheet use, and products are being commercialized with different specifications by thickness and application for each product model.

Additional tests are ongoing to achieve even better performance.

Shinjin Materials, jointly invested by S-Plus Comtec and Shinjin SM, will be responsible for mass production.
