Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) received the Grand Prize at the ‘2023 Outstanding Local Governments Competition for Free Home Collection of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)’ held on the 23rd, hosted by the Ministry of Environment and organized by e-Circulation Governance.
The ‘2023 Outstanding Local Governments Competition for Free Home Collection of WEEE’ (hereinafter referred to as the Competition) was established to advance the free home collection system for waste electrical and electronic equipment and improve operational efficiency. Through this competition, the Ministry of Environment selects exemplary cases from local governments nationwide.
In this competition, which was conducted in two categories: ‘WEEE Home Collection Operation’ and ‘Activation of Home Collection,’ Gangbuk-gu participated in the ‘WEEE Home Collection Operation’ category.
From September 2022 to August 2023 (performance evaluation period), the district collected free of charge ▲2,904 refrigerators (approximately 257 tons) ▲627 washing machines (approximately 36 tons) ▲520 air conditioners (approximately 5 tons) ▲2,090 TVs (approximately 46 tons). In July, when flood damage was severe, the district focused on collecting waste electrical appliances from flood disaster areas.
Additionally, the district actively promoted the free home collection system through various events it organized, such as the April 19 Revolution Cultural Festival and Dream Market, as well as through recycling sorting facility tours and experience programs. Since July, it has produced waste separation and disposal method guides in four languages and Braille to introduce the free home collection system for waste electrical appliances to multicultural families, foreigners, and visually impaired individuals.
Gangbuk-gu was recognized for these achievements in the comprehensive evaluation of free home collection performance and operational plans at this competition and received the Grand Prize (Minister of Environment Award) on the 23rd.
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, “We are establishing a proper resource circulation system through the free home collection system for waste electrical appliances,” and added, “We will continue to further activate the free home collection system and actively lead ESG management.”
