Removal of Street Stalls Causing Inconvenience to Nearby Residents Transformed into Spaces for Residents... A Total of 17 Street Vendors and Sidewalk Business Facilities Renovated This Year
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) has completed the maintenance of a total of 17 street vendors and sidewalk business facilities occupying the roads.
In particular, since around 2011, the street food stalls installed near Exit 1 of Oksu Station caused not only inconvenience to residents' passage but also aesthetic deterioration, and complaints requesting removal due to drinking and smoking were incessant. During this time, Seongdong-gu continuously issued guidance, ordered road restoration, and imposed fines to encourage voluntary removal. However, the street food stall owner illegally expanded the space nearby and continued operations, necessitating drastic measures.
Finally, in mid-November, Seongdong-gu undertook administrative enforcement to remove the street food stalls. With the presence of Seongdong Police Station and Oksu Police Substation, Seongdong-gu quickly dismantled the street food stall structures. To prevent the reinstallation of street food stalls at the site where maintenance was completed without major conflict, barriers were installed, and on the 28th of this month, parking lines were drawn and the area was converted into a parking lot.
Mr. Kim, in his 40s, residing in Oksu-dong, said, "It was always inconvenient when turning vehicles, but now that the street food stalls have been removed, visibility has improved and the street is cleaner, which is great."
In June, Seongdong-gu removed a street food stall near Seongsu Station that had caught fire, and in July, maintained a street food stall that had been operating for 30 years. The removed spaces were equipped with bicycle racks for residents to use. This year alone, the district has maintained 17 locations including street vendors, street food stalls, sidewalk business facilities such as street sales stands and shoe repair stands.
Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Securing safe pedestrian rights is fundamental to ensuring residents' safety, so we will strive to operate and manage facilities on the roads." He added, "We will continue to listen to the voices of residents and do our best to ensure there is no inconvenience in passage."
