Helen Keller Team Wins Grand Prize for 'A World That Understands Without Hearing
Bidirectional Sign Language Translation'

The College of Liberal Arts and Convergence at Gyeongnam National University recently achieved the honor of sweeping all the top awards?Grand Prize, Excellence Award, and Encouragement Award?in the analysis category of the ‘2023 Changwon City Big Data Contest’ held at Changwon City Hall Citizen Hall.

This contest, organized to discover creative big data utilization ideas and services that solve inconveniences in the daily lives of Changwon citizens and contribute to public development by leveraging public data, was held with the participation of 41 teams from universities and graduate schools nationwide.


Gyeongnam National University participated in the analysis category, and the ‘Helen Keller’ team (Jeon Ga-yeon, Kim Beom-mo, Ahn Hong-jo, Jeong Min-seong) won the highest award, the Grand Prize (Changwon Mayor’s Award), with their project titled ‘A World That Understands Without Hearing - Bidirectional Sign Language Translation.’


The Helen Keller team’s idea involved building a ‘Korean Sign Language Word-Video Corpus Dataset’ and applying ‘Slowfast’ and ‘Transformer AI models’ to propose a methodology for a ‘Korean Sign Language Bidirectional AI Translation System,’ which received high praise.


Additionally, Gyeongnam National University’s ‘BRTeam’ (Jeong Min-su, Joo Hye-rim, Ok Dong-in) received the Excellence Award for their project titled ‘Spatial Big Data Analysis to Activate Accessibility to S-BRT Fish Market,’ and the ‘Road_gil’ team (Kim Myung-jae, Park Kyu-tae, Jo Yong-min, Choi Yoon-seok) received the Encouragement Award for their project titled ‘Road Damage Prediction for Traffic Accident Prevention.’


Jeon Ga-yeon (4th year, Department of Public Administration) of the Helen Keller team said, “I felt proud to plan a project that helps socially vulnerable groups with my team members and to gain empathy from many people through a national competition on such a big stage. I believe that the innovation of technology is important to be ‘enjoyed by everyone together,’ and I will continue to take on challenges on various stages in the future.”


Jeon Young-rok, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Convergence, stated, “The College of Liberal Arts and Convergence at Gyeongnam National University supports students to solve local social issues by applying their majors and the latest software technologies through the interdisciplinary major program ‘Big Data Convergence Major’ and excellent faculty guidance. We will continue to support differentiated convergence education that integrates big data and artificial intelligence with domain fields to nurture creative convergence local talents who will lead the region’s 4th Industrial Revolution.”
