The Seoul Philharmonic announced on the 28th that it will hold a performance titled "Yap van Zweden's Beethoven Triple Concerto" on the 30th and December 1st. The stage will feature three young performers who have made their names in prestigious international competitions: cellist Han Jaemin, pianist Kim Suyeon, and violinist Kim Donghyun.
Beethoven's Triple Concerto is a concerto in which Beethoven presented a fresh and groundbreaking form by using three solo instruments. Its official title is "Concerto for Piano, Violin, Cello, and Orchestra," and it consists of three movements.
Unlike solo concertos, this piece features each of the three soloists playing solos as well as performing the main themes together with the orchestra in an ensemble style. Because of this, it is known as a work that allows listeners to experience the charms of both chamber music and symphonic music simultaneously.
The first movement begins with a march-like performance by the lower string instruments, and the second movement showcases beautiful melodies by the violin and cello. The third movement is characterized by lively and spirited melodies set to a polonaise rhythm played by the three instruments.
Beethoven's Triple Concerto is a work with a significant cello part, so much so that it is sometimes called the "Cello Concerto." Cellist Han Jaemin said, "It is a difficult piece, but I really like it. There is a lot contained in the music, and especially the second movement is unbelievably beautiful." He added, "The cello part includes challenging high positions that are both fun and difficult." He further explained, "While I usually play other pieces guided by my feelings, when performing Beethoven, I try to hold on to my 'mental focus.'"
In the second half, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 will be performed. This work is renowned for its rich emotions and lyrical melodies. It follows the traditional symphonic form of moving from darkness to victory, but it is a unique style piece that employs highly refined orchestration and a cyclical form based on the "fate motif."
This piece is the most popular among Tchaikovsky's symphonies and clearly reveals the composer's distinctive personality and musicality. It is praised for its brilliant melodies, dramatic tempo changes, and continuous twists, which inject strong tension and maximize the appeal of the symphony.
Tickets can be purchased through the Seoul Philharmonic's website and call center.
