Dobong-gu Warms Hearts with Year-End Kimchi Sharing of Love

On the 27th, as the government held the National Unity Kimchi-Making Event, various kimchi-making events with marginalized neighbors were also held throughout Dobong-gu.

This was thanks to the 'warm hands' gathered from all walks of society.

About 70 people, including North Korean defectors, military personnel, and Saemaeul Women's Association members, gathered at the lawn square that day. Despite the bad weather, those who gathered to practice a culture of sharing for their neighbors worked hard, mixing seasoning into the prepared salted napa cabbage.

The carefully prepared 10kg kimchi, totaling 280 boxes, was delivered to neighbors in difficult living conditions such as elderly living alone, single-parent families, and child-headed households.

Hwang I-seon, head of the Dobong-gu branch of the Saemaeul Movement, which organized the event, said, “I hope the kimchi prepared with love and sincerity by Saemaeul Women's Association members, North Korean defectors, and military personnel will be of some help to the households of those in need.”

A military serviceman who participated in the event also said, “I grew up eating kimchi made by my mother, and now as a grown adult, I am grateful to be able to make kimchi and share warmth for neighbors in need. I hope the delivered kimchi suits their tastes well.”

The kimchi-making event was also held at Seowonam, a private welfare hub institution. This day was one of the relay volunteer days continuing until November 30, with about 30 participants including the Doodream Music Troupe and mobile unit volunteers.

By the end of this month, about 160 people including the Community Security Council, Dobong-gu mobile unit, and Seowonam believers are expected to participate, and approximately 21,000 heads of kimchi will be delivered to 14 neighborhood community service centers in Dobong-gu and local welfare institutions.

The chief monk of Seowonam said, “This is the 36th year we have continued the kimchi-sharing event. We will continue to give and share so that the positive influence within the community can spread.”

Local volunteer groups also joined the kimchi-making events to help neighbors have a warm winter. About 12 volunteers from Ssangmun 1-dong Volunteer Camp held a ‘Love Kimchi Sharing’ event on the 27th, preparing 30 boxes of 5kg kimchi. The kimchi made that day was delivered to 30 vulnerable households in need, such as elderly living alone and multicultural families.

Additionally, on the 14th, the Ssangmun 4-dong Red Cross Volunteer Society, on the 21st, the Banghak 1-dong Volunteer Camp, and on the 23rd, the Chang 2-dong Community Security Council delivered about 1,000kg of kimchi to approximately 150 low-income households.

Oh Eon-seok, mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The warm hearts gathered throughout the region to help neighbors in need will warmly embrace Dobong-gu,” adding, “We will cooperate with all sectors of society to ensure that a culture of caring for the difficulties of neighbors around us and practicing sharing can spread.”
