Weekend (24~26) Box Office
The film 'Seoul's Spring,' based on the December 12 military coup, topped the box office by attracting 1.49 million viewers during its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 27th, 'Seoul's Spring' (directed by Kim Seong-su) drew 1,494,169 viewers over the three-day weekend (24th?26th), securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 22nd, the cumulative audience has reached 1,892,703.
This figure surpasses the opening week cumulative audience of 1.72 million for the film 'Smuggling' (directed by Ryu Seung-wan), which attracted a total of 5.14 million viewers this summer, making it the highest opening week score among films released this year after 'The Outlaws 3' (directed by Lee Sang-yong).
'Seoul's Spring,' inspired by the December 12 military coup led by Chun Doo-hwan, Roh Tae-woo, and the secret military faction Hanahoe within the armed forces, depicts the tense nine hours on December 12, 1979, in Seoul, the capital, as the new military forces attempted a coup.
Actor Hwang Jung-min received praise for his portrayal of Jeon Doo-gwang, inspired by Chun Doo-hwan, while Jung Woo-sung played Lee Tae-shin, the commander of the Capital Security Command. The film was directed by Kim Seong-su, known for directing 'Beat' (1997), 'Flu' (2013), and 'Asura' (2016).
The film started strong with over 200,000 viewers on its opening day and maintained steady interest. Notably, to revive the sluggish film industry, directors Lee Jung-jae, Kim Han-min, and Ryu Seung-wan participated in GV (guest visits) sessions to support promotion efforts.
In second place was 'Freddy's Pizzeria,' which attracted 158,572 viewers. Released on the 15th, the film has a cumulative audience of 560,873.
Third place was taken by the animated film 'Snow Fox: I Will Become a Sled Dog!' with 35,483 viewers, followed by 'How Will You Live?' with 34,149 viewers in fourth place.
The foreign film 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,' seen by 17,813 viewers, ranked fifth, while the Marvel film 'The Marvels,' released on the 8th, drew 17,760 viewers, placing sixth. The film has a cumulative audience of 678,698, reflecting a disappointing performance.
Seventh place went to 'Tooth Fairy Violeta: I Want to Return to Fairyland!', ninth to 'Loan Shark Boy,' and tenth to '30 Days.'
The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was recorded at 1,892,880.
