Why Did Gangdong-gu Become the First Nationwide to Conduct Disaster Safety Education Led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety?

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Su-hee) announced on the 21st that it conducted the nation’s first "2023 Local Government Heads Disaster Safety Training" organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted a pilot role-playing training in Gangdong-gu for the first time nationwide to strengthen local governments’ disaster response and recovery capabilities and disaster site leadership during disaster occurrences.

This training assumed a disaster situation caused by an earthquake and was conducted in a role-playing format so that public officials, who must lead disaster sites, could acquire disaster response capabilities and on-site leadership by practicing how local governments should carry out initial responses and how to operate collaborative systems with disaster management agencies to overcome the disaster.

On the day, Gangdong-gu officials, including the mayor and members of the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and the On-site Integrated Support Headquarters, practiced role-playing for on-site response and recovery assuming an earthquake occurrence at the Gangdong Seonsa Cultural Festival site.

Following this, customized consulting education including feedback from instructors composed of senior government officials (levels 1 and 2) and expert professors in competency evaluation was provided regarding the district’s disaster response situation handling practice.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which organized the training, "To promote a proactive attitude and strengthen disaster response capabilities of local governments, participatory disaster safety training using role-playing for local government heads was introduced," and added, "Starting with the pilot role-playing training conducted for the first time in Gangdong-gu, the training will be expanded nationwide in the future."

Lee Su-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "Through this disaster safety training, we were able to closely review what and how to respond at each stage when a disaster involving large-scale casualties occurs," and added, "Based on this, we will further strengthen Gangdong-gu’s disaster response capabilities and do our best to make Gangdong a safe place for residents."

Meanwhile, Gangdong-gu was selected as the best institution by receiving high scores in all categories, including ▲training preparation and implementation process ▲the mayor’s interest and excellent command capabilities during training ▲active participation of related organizations and increased resident participation, in the ‘2022 Seoul Safety Korea Training Evaluation.’
