Professor Shin Sujeong, Seoul National University Emeritus, Appointed Next President of the Academy of Arts

The Vice Chairman is Son Jinchaek, Director of Geukdan Michu

On the 23rd, the National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea elected Professor Emeritus Shin Su-jeong of Seoul National University and Son Jin-chaek, representative of the theater company Michu, as the next president and vice president, respectively, at its regular general meeting. Their terms will last for two years, from next month until December 2025.

President-elect Shin graduated from Seoul National University College of Music and the Vienna National Academy of Music and Performing Arts. In 1969, he was appointed as the youngest professor at Seoul National University and served as dean of the College of Music from 2005 to 2007. He has held solo recitals in Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and collaborated with numerous orchestras such as KBS, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic, and NHK, maintaining an active performance career. He has received various honors including the Order of Cultural Merit, Ok-gwan (1995), the German Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (2011), and the Hanyang Baeknam Music Award (2023). He has been a member of the Academy since 2009.


Vice President-elect Son graduated from the Department of Theater and Film at Seorabeol Arts University and debuted in the theater world in 1974 with "Seoul Maltuk-i." He has directed many works including the traditional Korean courtyard play "Heosaengjeon" and the Korean opera "Yun Bong-gil Uisa." Recognized for his talent, he served as the general director of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup opening ceremony, a director at the Seoul Arts Center, and artistic director of the National Theater Company of Korea. He has left various achievements and received honors such as the Lee Hae-rang Theater Award (2003) and the Order of Civil Merit, Magnolia Medal (2010). This year, he demonstrated his continued vitality by directing the opera "Turandot." He has been a member of the Academy since 2017.
