Heating appliance fires in Gyeonggi Province have been increasing every year. Accordingly, the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters has urged special caution regarding heating appliance fires.
According to the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 21st, the number of heating appliance fires in the Gyeonggi area over the past three years totaled 1,604 cases, with 499 in 2020, 543 in 2021, and 562 in 2022, showing an increasing trend each year. In particular, 916 cases, accounting for 57% of all heating appliance fires, occurred during the winter months from November to February.
As a result, casualties were recorded as 33 in 2020, 32 in 2021, and 43 in 2022.
Regarding the locations of fire occurrences, out of the total 1,604 cases, 681 cases (42.5%) occurred in residential facilities. This was followed by ▲industrial facilities with 330 cases (20.6%) ▲sales and office facilities with 128 cases (8%) ▲living services with 110 cases (6.9%).
By cause, negligence accounted for 550 cases, representing 34.3%. This was followed by electrical factors (32.4%) and mechanical factors (29.8%).
The provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters advised not to leave heating devices unattended while operating and to avoid prolonged use. They also prohibited connecting multiple devices to a single outlet and added that products such as electric mats used spread out on the floor should be used carefully to avoid folding or being pressed by heavy objects.
