'The Marvels' Falls to 2nd Place Amid Harsh Criticism
The horror movie 'Freddy's Pizzeria' topped the box office in its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 20th, 'Freddy's Pizzeria' attracted 232,843 viewers over the three days of last weekend (17th-19th), securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 15th, it has accumulated a total audience of 340,630.
Produced by Blumhouse, 'Freddy's Pizzeria' is a survival horror-entertaining (horror + entertaining) movie about Mike, who takes a night security job at a long-closed pizzeria where children went missing in the 1980s, and witnesses the bizarre reality of the pizzeria's mascots.
The film has garnered attention from viewers in their teens and twenties online, with reactions describing it as "scary but cute."
Marvel's 'The Marvels', which dropped to second place, drew only 91,216 viewers. Released on the 8th, it has attracted a cumulative audience of 630,829. It lost face by failing to reach one million viewers during its second weekend.
The film received harsh criticism for its limited special appearance by actor Park Seo-joon, consumption style, and content.
In third place was the Japanese animation 'How Do You Live?', which drew 88,399 viewers. 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes' attracted 81,716 viewers, placing fourth.
All of the top four weekend box office spots were held by foreign films. Fifth place went to '30 Days' starring Kang Ha-neul and Jung So-min (directed by Nam Dae-jung), sixth to director Jeong Ji-young's 'Boys', and seventh to the re-released 'Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight'.
The total number of moviegoers visiting theaters over the weekend was counted at 789,201.
