Gwanak-gu, a Child-Friendly City, Creates a Happy Week for Children

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is vigorously working to create an environment where the rights of children, the future leaders of society, are respected and guaranteed.

The district was certified as a Child-Friendly City by UNICEF in 2020. This year, it has established the "2nd Four-Year Plan for a Child-Friendly City (2023?2026)" and published the "Child-Friendly Budget Book," accelerating efforts to achieve a higher-level certification in 2024.

Additionally, the district is building an environment for children's participation in local governance through "customized child rights education by target groups," including children, parents, and child facility workers, and by operating a "Child Rights Monitoring Group," thereby creating a highly complete child-friendly city.

Furthermore, on November 20, the district will hold a commemorative event to promote child rights in celebration of "Child Rights Week." Child Rights Week refers to the week including "Universal Children's Day (11.20)" and "Child Abuse Prevention Day (11.19)."

The event will be held both outdoors at the Gwanak-gu Office plaza and indoors. The program includes ▲ Child Rights Drawing Exhibition ▲ Screening of Child Abuse Prevention Promotional Videos ▲ Child Rights Advocacy Campaign ▲ and a "Reading Golden Bell" by local children's centers, among other diverse activities.

First, 20 award-winning works from the "2023 Child Rights Drawing Contest" will be exhibited in the outdoor plaza. The 2023 Child Rights Drawing Contest, held last September to improve awareness of children and spread a culture of respecting child rights, involved participation from daycare centers, local children's centers, and elementary to high school students, who depicted the neighborhoods children wish for and dream about.

The district will also conduct a child abuse prevention campaign in collaboration with the Gwanak Police Station and the Seoul Southern Child Protection Agency. Videos on child abuse prevention will be screened, promotional materials distributed, and residents' awareness of preventing child abuse will be enhanced.

In addition, the district will hold quizzes on the four fundamental rights of children (▲ right to survival ▲ right to development ▲ right to protection ▲ right to participation) and promote the district’s child-friendly city policies to residents, working to create a community where children can live well.

Fun events for children will not be missing from the Child Rights Week celebration. Indoors, the district will hold the "Reading Golden Bell" in the district office auditorium. The Reading Golden Bell, organized by KT&G and Gwanak-gu Local Children's Centers as part of a children's book support project, will allow children to showcase their reading skills they have diligently developed and enjoy themselves.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, "I hope this Child Rights Week commemorative event will be an opportunity for residents to understand the child-friendly city and child rights," and added, "We will do our best to create an environment where children's rights are respected and guaranteed and to build a community where children can live happily."
